Troye Sivan Taps Into The Idol’s Indie-Sleaze Aesthetic on the Red Carpet

HBO drama The Idol focuses on the seedy underworld of Hollywood—delivering highly stylized visions of barely-there LA fashion, pop stardom, and A-List stars. It promises to be a strong entrant into the indie sleaze revival. (Some already-established notable canon, for reference: British teen-drama Skins and A24 gem Spring Breakers.) Troye Sivan, who features in the HBO drama as creative director to a troubled pop star (played by Lily Rose Depp) is expertly extending the show’s hedonistic vibes to the red carpet. While promoting the project at Cannes Film Festival, where the show’s first two episodes were screened on Monday night, the star donned an outfit fit for a dive bar romp.

Sivan wore a custom look by Valentino that included a billowy white shirt and matching tie with cold-shoulder cut-outs, coal-black schoolboy shorts, and a pair of square-toed boots with studding details. The grunge-meets-corporate ensemble, styled by Marc Forne, got a helpful dose of personality through the star’s recent at-home haircut (which he playfully documented on Instagram), which includes burnt-yellow highlights and unfussy bangs. It all culminates in a fresh take on upscale menswear dressing. The entire cast of the Sam Levinson-created drama has been bringing it, in fact, from Blackpink’s Jennie Kim wearing bridal Chanel to Lily Rose Depp turning to the same house’s storied archive to Abel Tesfaye donning a sleek Loewe suit.

Sivan has enjoyed a fabulous streak of daring looks while in Cannes. He opted for another sliced-and-diced look last night via a Alexander McQueen outfit that featured an open-knit top. And, before The Idol’s premiere, he wore a suit by Valentino that also featured subtle cut-out details. It’s exciting to see the star really go for it!
